Oct 09, 2010·In our area, a chisel plow is 15 HP/foot minimum. We rent a disc chisel (twisted shovels) every once in a while to pull behind our Oliver 1855 and 7 shanks is all that tractor wants. Last year we borrowed a neighbors 7 shank sub soiler and dropped it to 5 shanks. Was able to sink it about 18", which would have been well below any plow pan.

Oct 15, 2009·For a plain chisel the minumem HP per shank was called for of 10 HP but that was at only about 7" deep and slow, double that and you would be about right, now on a disk chisel double that again to get what you need, a 7 shank disk chisel will make a 150 HP tractor bark and they cut about 9'.

We pulled an 11 shank Hiniker disc/chisel with a 4840 in heavy soils and it handled it alright, usually 4th gear in the power-shift. I don't recall the model of the tillage tool, but it would have been made in the mid-late 80's.

A 40HP tractor can handle anything from a heavy 5' 3pt disc to a lightweight 10' drag disc harrow depending upon conditions.
